GR10 in the French Pyrenees. Day 5: Gîte de Saint-Justin – Lac d’Aubert
High on sugar (and groceries), I left Bareges and through silent valleys headed towards Neouvielle nature reserve, famous for its numerous lakes.

Today I’m having an easy day. I need to recover from a few long days in the high Pyrenees and mentally I feel drained. According to the GR10 itinerary, my destination is Bareges village, which is only 12km away. Nice!
Today I was planning to divert from GR10 to cross to the Spanish side of the Pyrenees. Plans are meant to be broken though and I didn’t make it to Spain. Day 3 was actually the most stressful of the whole Pyrenees trip. So what happened?
It’s day #2 and it was a long day. Many kilometers, many experiences. it started with quite a long climb to Hourquette d’Ossoue (2734m), which is the highest pass on GR10.
I was excited, nervous, focused, curious – a hurricane of emotions went through my head as I headed to the beginning of the trail. After years of hiking with Edo, it was kind of weird to be alone.
Pyrenees mountains are quite steep and green, while clouds tend to linger above the valleys until late lunch. Overall, I fell in love with this region and felt that it has its own unique landscape and vibe.
Together with my boyfriend, I walked GR5 in the summer of 2021. In this post, I’d like to share with you my reflections on this adventure: what I liked about this hike and what to keep in mind in case you are considering walking GR5 as well.
Little did I know that hiking is very much possible in winter too, you can even do it without any special equipment or skills such as skiing.
It is a very scenic winter trail. Tall mountains were around us the whole time, it was truly a panoramic path.
I came across this route as it is relatively close to Zürich, where we stayed. It does not require snowshoes and promises great views. And they were great indeed.
The most famous section of GR5 is a trek through the French Alps from Geneva lake to Nice. This post is a comprehensive guide for anyone planning to hike GR5.
In this post, you’ll find the 3 misses and 4 hits on my quest for finding the best trail food. When searching for trail dish ideas, I pay close attention not only to the taste and energy but also to the weight of the food.
